Academy of Sex and Relationships, London, UK
(Yet to be opened)
In October 2005 developers announced plans to
build a muli-million pound sexual "theme park" at the
Trocadero, near London's Picadilly Square.
Called the Academy of Sex and Relationships, the
new tourist attraction will even offer "high tech and interactive
exhibits". It expects to attract more than 600,000 visitors
a year.
The devopers say the Academy will not be for titillation,
but will rather help to educate the public about topics such as
disease, sexual problems and better sexual relationships.
Director of Exhibits Dr Sarah Brewer said, "It
is long overdue that the UK faces up to its responsibilities in
the sexual arena - we can't simply avoid mankind's leading preoccupation
and the issues that go with it. The academy is the perfect vehicle
by which to address these important matters in an exciting, amusing
and yet educational way."
The privately funded exhibit has the support of
various sexual health organisations, including the Sexual Dysfunction
Association and AIDS charity The Terrence Higgins Trust.
Ann Tailor, director of the Sexual Dysfunction
Association, said: "Through the academy we can break the taboos
surrounding sexual dysfunction and stop people suffering in silence."
