Beate Uhse Erotik-Museum - Berlin, Germany
This popular sex museum in the hip and groovy Berlin is one of
the city's top tourist attractions.
It was founded by, and named after, the grande dame of the German
adult trade, Beate
Uhse, a woman who opened the world's first shop
devoted to "marital hygiene" in the 1960s. Her erotic
empire is now huge, and her company is listed on the German stock
exchange.
This museum is the culmination of a dream for Beate, and was opened
in 1996. Located in a relatively seedy area of Berlin, it offers
a variety of erotic artefacts as well as a huge adult store.
Collection Highlights
Carved whale penises, Chinese "Wedding Tiles" from the
18th-19th centuries, Japanese Shunga art, 2000 year old Peruvian
drinking vessels, photographs of Berlin's more famous erotic clubs
and a special exhibition highlighting the life of the museum's founder,
Beate Uhse.
