The Erotic Museum - Hollywood, USA
The Erotic Museum is located in a former garter
factory on the famous Hollywood Boulevard. It opened in January
2003 to much media fanfare and, thankfully, minimal complaints from
local authorities.
The museum is owned by Mark Volper, a long-time
collector of erotic art, and Boris Smorodinsky, both Russian immigrants.
Volper says it took eight months and over $900,000 to establish
the museum. "You cannot talk about sex without smiling. It'll
kill you if you go through life without talking about sex,"
he said when the museum opened.
Curator Eric Singly told USA Today that he opted
for items that showed "sex as interesting instead of sex as
gratuitous."
The Museum's Mission Statement declares an intention
to education as well as entertain. "Our ultimate goal is to
provide the community with a positive image of the potential of
human sexuality."
The museum's 6000 square metres is divided into
numerous sections, with the downstairs area mainly showcasing the
permanent collection. Upstairs are numerous temporary exhibitions.
