Musee de l'Erotisme - Paris, France
Just
up the road from the Moulin Rouge on Boulevard de Clichy in Pigalle,
Paris is the Musee de l'Erotisme - The Museum of Erotica. Located
amid the less savoury businesses of the red light district, the
museum is clean, softly lit and well patronised, mainly by curious
tourists.
Opened in 1998, the museum is owned and run by Alain Plumey and
Joseph Khalifa. Both men refurbished an old cabaret house in order
to display their 30-year collection of erotic artefacts. The local
government authorities welcomed the museum as a new tourist attraction
that would help revive the run-down area of Pigalle. "We take
sex seriously in France and it's about time we had a museum dedicated
to it," one council member is reported to have said.
The museum's large window's display a number of risque items, including
a mechanised cunnilingus chair, but so far there have been no complaints.
The collection is spread across seven floors, with the top three
floors reserved for temporary art exhibitions. The owners have expressed
a desire that their museum become an area to showcase up-and-coming
erotic artistes.
Apparently the majority of visitors to the Museum of Erotica are
women, although plenty of couples also peruse the shelves.
