Museum Erotica, Copenhagen, Denmark
Founded in 1992 and opened in 1994, Museum Erotica
is another fine example of the classic European sex museum. It champions
"art, kitsch and commerce". It's website says the museum
has played host to over a million visitors since it opened, half
of whom were women.
The museum was founded by Ole Ege and Kim Clausen.
Ege has worked as a photographer and filmmaker, and he created many
adult films in the late sixties and seventies. For decades
Denmark has been sexually liberated he told RyanAir Magazine,
but we are still not liberated in our heads. For me eroticism
refers to the best and finest things of life."
It has 25 galleries featuring a wide range of
erotic artefacts, artwork, films and photography. The exhibits become
more explicit as you ascend each floor.
Denmark was one of the first European countries
to liberalise pornography, in 1967, and the museum showcases the
changes that occured during that time with a special exhibition.
The museum offers conference facilities, bachelor
parties and even offers sex education tours for primary school students.
