Museum of Sex, New York, USA
New York's Museum of Sex, or MoSex, as it is also
known, was conceived and founded by Daniel Gluck as an "institution
unlike any other one wholly dedicated to the exploration
of the history, evolution and cultural significance of human sexuality.
In keeping with this mission, the museum advocates open discourse
and strives to present to the public the best in current scholarship
unhindered by self-censorship."
The museum opened with a special exhibition cataloguing
the history of sex in New York itself, with everything from secret
gay resorts, brothels and condom manufacturers, to the anti-vice
crusades of Anthony Comstock. Since then it has shown seven temporary
exhibitions along with its standard permanent collection. The museum
also offers online exhibitions via its website.
The museum was originally denied "non profit"
status by the upstanding local officials of New York, however this
has since changed. It's charter will not allow it to accept donations
from the adult industry.
There are over 9000 items in the museum's permanent
collection. Most are from the US and reflect 250 years of American
sexuality.
Collection Highlights
Ralph Whittington collection of pornography, striptease
and burlesque artifacts, Lannan foundation modern art. Current temporary
exhibitions include "Men Without Suits" and "Sex
Machines".
