Sex Museum and VenusTempel - Amsterdam, Netherlands
The Amsterdam Sex Museum and Venus Temple is the oldest erotic
museum in the world. It first opened in 1985 and in 2005 celebrated
its 20th anniversary.
Located in a 17th century building, the museum originally only
had a couple of cabinets worth of erotic objects. It wasn't long,
however, before the enthusiasm of visitors prompted the owners to
expand. The museum now has three huge sections and caters to over
500,000 visitors every year.
During excavation of the building, renovators uncovered two erotic
artefacts: a fragment of a Delft Blue tile showing a man with an
erection playing cards, and a small antique Hermes figurine with
an enormous penis.
Visitors are greeted at the entrance by a satyr with an erect penis
and a life-size animatronic statue of a flasher. Most of the exhibits
are relatively tame, however there is a room towards the end of
the museum that contains photographs that will shock people, and
it carries an appropriate warning.
