World Erotic Art Museum - South Beach, USA
Opened
in October 2005, the World Erotic Art Museum in Florida is the third
erotic museum to open in the US.
It's the brainchild of 70 year old Naomi Wilzig,
who has collected more than 4000 pieces over the past 13 years.
It's one of the largest private collections of erotic artifacts
in the world and has been valued at ten million dollars.
Wilzig was originally a collector of more mundane
art until her son asked her to find something risque for his apartment.
It began an obsessive search through the US and Europe for anything
erotic and artistic. Originally she had trouble communicating her
needs to antique dealers, but solved the problem buy hanging a sign
around her neck that said "Buying Erotica."
"Miss Naomi" has published five books
cataloguing her collection (see our book page). She previously kept
it all in her apartment until finally deciding to put it on public
display.
The museum's 12,000 square feet offers a wide
variety of artifacts dating from 1000BC to modern times.
Curator Eric Singley said: "Like any art,
its difficult to judge what a good piece of erotic art is
if the concept is to sort of inspire the sexual response
in the viewer and theres also quality in the execution and
composition, then it might work
"
